Old School Swainby

Glenrate succesfully prepared the Planning and Listed Building application for the conversion and restoration of this former Victorian school.

In extending and altering the existing school it was important to ensure that the architectural integrity of the existing Victorian building was maintained and not challenged visually or spatially. Any extension should complement the existing architecture without copying it, in order to ensure that the differences are noticeable without being overpowering. In this way the architecture of both periods is legible.

The front elevation to Church Lane is to be restored fully with repairs being carried out to the original windows and brickwork. The design ensures that minimal alterations to the original design take place.

The rear of the school offers an opportunity for the introduction of a modern architectural element to the building. The proposed extension provides quality living accommodation and the simplicity of the form enables a clear distinction between the old and the new elements. The rectangular plan sits neatly into the existing L - shaped layout without any loss of clarity between the architectural periods.
